Beginner's Guide to Vermicomposting
Everything you need to confidently start, care for, and grow a thriving composting worm colony.
Before You Begin
Successful vermicomposting starts with understanding that you're caring for a living ecosystem—not simply raising worms.
Composting worms thrive when provided with:
- Proper bedding
- Balanced moisture
- Fresh airflow
- Moderate temperatures
- Consistent feeding
Getting these basics right creates the foundation for a healthy, productive colony.
The Five Basics
-
🪱 Healthy Worms
Begin with an active colony or healthy cocoons from a trusted source.
-
🌱 Proper Bedding
Use moist carbon-rich bedding that allows worms to breathe and move freely. -
💧 Moisture
Keep bedding as damp as a wrung-out sponge.
-
🍎 Food
Feed small amounts consistently instead of overfeeding.
-
🌡 Temperature
Keep worms comfortable between roughly 55–80°F and avoid direct sunlight.
Your First Month
Week 1
Set up your worm habitat and allow the worms to settle.
Week 2
Introduce small amounts of food while monitoring moisture and activity.
Week 3
Healthy worms become more active and begin breaking down organic material more efficiently.
Week 4
Your ecosystem becomes established, beneficial microbes flourish, and you'll notice visible progress in decomposition.
